Hot Cross-Stitch
This western-inspired sampler pulls together elements of Texas wildlife, cowboy culture, and Native American–influenced designs to create a piece of artwork perfect for a baby’s nursery or the bedroom of a kid obsessed with the Wild West. Use the lettering patterns to personalize the sampler shown on this page or stick to the smaller hooped design for a simple project with the feel of a Comanche weaving.

INSTRUCTIONS
1 Depending on which project you’ve chosen, place the Aida cloth in the embroidery hoop or in the scroll frame and tighten the closure. Pull the fabric taut on all sides.
2 Thread your needle with a 12" (30.5-cm) length of pearl cotton and if you prefer, knot the long end.
3 Follow your desired pattern, using the stitch instructions below.
HOW TO CROSS-STITCH
Cross-stitch is one of the easiest stitches to learn. Master these basics, and there will be no stopping the possibilities!
CREATE A SINGLE CROSS-STITCH
1 Insert the needle from underneath the hoop or frame up through point A; pull the needle through. Insert the needle down into point B and back up through point C; pull the needle through.
2 Insert the needle down into point D; pull the needle through.
CREATE A ROW OF CROSS-STITCH
4 Insert the needle from underneath the hoop or frame up through point A. Insert the needle down into point B.
5 Repeat by inserting the needle up through the next point A and down into the next point B across the row.
6 At the end of the row, insert the needle down into the last point B, then back up through point C; pull the needle through.
7 Insert the needle down into point D. Repeat to complete the row.
